Request an AppointmentWhat to Expect During Your Orthodontic Exam
Your visit begins with a conversation. Dr. Schur wants to hear about your goals, concerns, and any questions you have about orthodontic treatment. From there, he performs a detailed evaluation of your teeth, jaw relationship, facial structure, and how your bite functions when you chew and speak.
We use advanced technology to gather precise information, including digital x-rays, photographs, and 3D images captured with our iTero digital scanner. Instead of messy impressions, the iTero creates a highly accurate digital model of your teeth in minutes. In many cases, we can show you a video simulation of exactly how your teeth, or your child’s teeth, will move during treatment, right at your exam visit.
Conditions We Evaluate
An orthodontic exam can identify a wide range of alignment and bite concerns, including:
- Crowded or crooked teeth
- Gaps and spacing between teeth
- Overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite
- Jaw growth and development concerns in children
- Teeth that have shifted after previous orthodontic treatment
- Uneven tooth wear caused by a misaligned bite
Your Personalized Treatment Plan
After your evaluation, Dr. Schur will explain his findings in clear, easy-to-understand terms and review all of your options. Depending on your needs, this may include Invisalign® clear aligners, Invisalign® Teen, braces for children, or braces for adults. If treatment isn’t needed yet, especially for younger children, we may recommend periodic monitoring so we can begin at the ideal time.
Our treatment coordinator will then walk you through costs, insurance benefits, and scheduling, so you leave with a clear picture of your next steps. Orthodontic exams aren’t just for kids. Adults benefit from an evaluation too, and roughly 45% of our patients are adults.

Orthodontic Exam FAQs
What age should my child have their first orthodontic exam?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early evaluation helps catch potential issues before they become more difficult to correct.
How long does an orthodontic exam take?
Most exams take about 30 to 60 minutes. This includes digital scans, photos, and x-rays as needed, followed by a discussion of your treatment options.
Do I need a referral to get an orthodontic exam at Schur Orthodontics?
No referral is necessary. Anyone interested in an orthodontic evaluation can schedule an appointment directly with us by calling (425) 747-4477.
Will an orthodontic exam be painful?
Not at all. The exam is completely painless and comfortable. Our iTero digital scanner eliminates messy impressions, and our team makes sure you feel relaxed and informed throughout your visit.
Can adults get orthodontic exams too?
Absolutely. Orthodontic care isn’t just for kids. Roughly 45% of our patients are adults, and we offer discreet treatment options designed for adult lifestyles.
Is the initial orthodontic exam free?
Yes. We offer a complimentary initial evaluation so you can learn about your options and costs before making any decisions. You can also start with a free virtual consultation.
What should I bring to my orthodontic exam?
Bring your insurance information and a list of any medications. If you’ve had recent x-rays taken by your dentist, let us know so we can request them ahead of time. Completing your new patient forms online before your visit will also save time.
